Getaway City Is.....
In just over six years, Getaway City has become known throughout East Central Iowa for their unique mix of blues and classic rock of the sixties, seventies, and early eighties. They specialize in blues and classic rock of Stevie Ray Vaughan, CCR, the Beatles, B.B. King and many other artists of the era.
They have been honored to play at several well-known venues throughout Eastern Iowa including headlining the 2017 Cedar Rapids Market After Dark, 2016 and 2017 Fridayloo Concert Series in Lincoln Park, Waterloo as well as many, many other small town celebrations, festivals, street dances, AmVet Halls, Eagles Clubs, and local drinking establishments.
Band members include 6'-10" tall Kent Aschenbrenner, who KWWL tv says literally takes his guitar & harmonica playing to "new heights". He is joined by Amanda Haker on keyboard/vocals, Dennis Guernsey on bass guitar/vocals, and Kirsten Fodness on drums. Together they ensure an unforgettable night of live music that will have your hands clapping and your toes tapping from the first note to the very last.
Dennis began playing bass guitar and singing during high school in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area with such bands as the "Devil's Brood", the "91st Street Blueberry Band Review", and the "Trollmen".
During his college days, he was a founding member of "Nick and the Whales"-enjoying the music of the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. Here he acquired the nickname of Lefty, as Nick's right-hand man.
After college, Dennis rested his band chops until joining the band "Misty" in 1989. During his almost twenty years with "Misty", he had the pleasure of meeting and playing with many fine, talented local musicians-including Kent and Amanda of Getaway City. "Misty" also opened for or was the back-up band for such national acts as Dottie West, Bill Anderson, John Conlee, Bobby Bare, Dale Black, and others. Recently Dennis has been playing with the "Channel Cats" of Cedar Falls.
Dennis earned his BA and JD degrees at the University of Iowa. He has his own office and has been practicing law in Waterloo since 1976. He occasionally runs a special deal where for an extra $50 he will guarantee you the maximum sentence allowed by law!
Kirsten grew up in the Minneapolis area, began playing trumpet in the fifth grade, and studied trumpet in college. She earned her BA in music education from Luther College in 1994, which is where she met Amanda.
She was a band director in South Dakota for eight years and did a stint playing trumpet in the Navy Band and was stationed for four years in San Diego.
She has also subbed on trumpet in the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band. She didn't start playing drums until later in life, buying her first drum kit after graduating from college.
Kirsten enjoys listening to and playing a wide variety of music. She especially enjoys classic rock and blues, such as CCR, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Led Zeppelin.
Kirsten is currently employed at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City as a histology technician. In her spare time, she enjoys playing trumpet, still doing the occasional church gig, playing drums, hanging out with friends, and an occasional round of golf. She also LOVES cats. Meow!
Known by most of his friends as "Big Bird", Kent has been playing and singing in bands for the past 25 years. He first started playing drums in the William Penn Jazz & Dixieland bands. After his friends sold their guitars and bought drums, Kent switched to guitar. In June 1992 he was hired by his friend and mentor, Vern Kolpek of the country-rock band "Misty" on guitar and vocals.
Kent has been blessed to perform with many local and nationally known musicians throughout Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Fate brought two of those musicians into his own band with the reuniting of Dennis and Amanda from their years together in "Misty" as mentioned earlier.
Kent loves music in most all forms. His two greatest influences are Creedence Clearwater Revival and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. In his spare time, Kent can usually be found in the studio or riding his Harley Davidson.
Kent owns and operates Aschenbrenner Farms which was established in 1883 by his great, great grandfather. He is married to his wife Lisa and they have two grown sons, Jayson and Jon.
